The lecturer has assigned us some in-class activity, discussing about Computer- Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
These are our answers related to the questions given by the lecturer:
1)Which courses incorporate the use of computer in the teaching and learning?
Our answer is : Semantics
2)Were the computer-based activities related to any of the THREE stages of CALL?
Our answers:
There is one assignment on noun phrases that is related to the last stage of CALL and it is the Integrative CALL
The assignment on Semantics can be described as followed:
-An online article from a reliable source is used and for this assignment all students use the articles from The Economist
-The students organize the article chosen in the word processor and revise the article in term of the noun phrase
-They put the noun phrases into a table and classify them into several categories such as integral, individuated and identification not required (INR)
-The students discuss among themselves about the noun phrases that they found in the articles
-Before doing a report on the noun phrases, the lecturer evaluates the task whether the noun phrases have been categorized correctly or not in their respective types
3)What are the important concepts in the THREE stages related to the activities?
Our answers:
The important concepts of Integrative CALL in the activity:
-Network-based computer is used by the students to search for the online articles that are available in the databases
-The article is written by the native speaker of English and this indicates the authentic use of language presents in the activity
-The source from the databases is organized into word processor and the students revise it according to the aspect that they need to look upon
-Computer acts as a tool for interactive communication because the students discuss among themselves the correct type for each noun phrase when they manually do the categorizing task in the word processor
-Interactive communication is created between the students and the lecturer since they involve in the process of completing the task.
Reflection 2 (on Lesson Plan)
1.We should be organized in anything that we do.
- There should be a plan or procedure of how things will be conducted.
- A step-by-step procedure is needed to indicate what comes first and what follows after that as well as how it ends.
2.Time management is very important.
- The time given for a lesson to take place must be used wisely.
- The content and activities for the lesson should be chosen appropriately to prevent from wasting time through out the lesson.
3.Put yourself to others’ shoes.
- Before creating the activities, we need to know whether they are suitable and applicable for the students to be engaged in.
-This is to avoid from giving difficult tasks to the students.
- Besides, the content of the lesson must be beneficial not only for the learning purpose but also for them to adopt it in real situations.
Reflection 3 (on CMC)
1)CMC has become an important means of communication in the current time due to the advanced technology.
2)CMC makes it possible for people to communicate via an online setting.
3)After conducting the analysis on Facebook posts on MH370, it can be seen that users use CMC to deliver their thoughts about the issue and it is actually easier than communicating their thoughts in face-to-face communication
4)The discussion on MH370 in Facebook between the users can be seen as interactive as the communication in the real setting due to its features.
5)Its features make it to be a reliable means for communication and the features include: it is textual-based communication, it is visualized, interactive, format-oriented, editable, conversational-like, it focuses on content and it is in a written form.
Reflection 4 ( Mini Proposal)
1) There were not many articles on several topics related to CALL such as grammar checker.
2) During the process of making the proposal, we learn that in order for a research to have reliable and consistent results the methodology should be clear, detailed and comprehensive.
3)We learn to be creative and innovative when producing the research proposal in order to make it up-to-date and appropriate to the current time.
Reflection 5 (on Blog)
1)Blog can be used as a tool to deliver information about something to a mass audience via online setting.
2)It helps us to be more creative in creating the blog so that the blog will be interactive and user-friendly.
3)We learn how to be selective in sharing the information posted on blog so that it will not be too crowded with information.
4)Blog is easy to be accessed, interactive, comprehensive, interesting and attractive.
5)We learn to trust and challenge ourselves in giving the informative content through the blog which can benefit the audiences.
